Thinking about Botox or fillers? That’s great! But, before you dive in, let’s clear up some common misconceptions about the placement of Botox and fillers so that you can make informed decisions about your cosmetic goals.
Misconception 1: You can get a ‘little’ Botox in your forehead to lift the brow.
People often ask if a little Botox in the forehead can lift the brow. While it’s true that Botox can smooth the forehead, it can actually cause the brow to droop. To achieve a brow lift, we inject Botox into the outer corner of the brow (the lateral tail) and between the eyes (the head of the brow).
Misconception 2: You can put Botox in the nasolabial folds to smooth smile and laugh lines.
Many people believe that Botox can be used to smooth smile lines (nasolabial folds). However, fillers or collagen stimulators are actually the best options for this area to smooth or soften lines. Injecting Botox here can cause the mouth to droop, leading to a crooked smile or less tooth show. This can be beneficial for people with a gummy smile as it can reduce gum visibility. Even still, if Botox is used in this area, it’s typically injected closer to the nose.
Misconception 3: You can use Botox to lift the cheeks and create volume laterally to lift the mid and lower face.
Another common misconception is that Botox can lift the cheeks and add volume to the mid and lower face. While fillers, collagen stimulators, and lasers are primarily used for these purposes, Botox can be injected into the muscles beneath the corners of the mouth (near the jowl area) to lift this part of the jawline. However, it won’t provide the same lifting effect as a facelift.
Misconception 4: Botox in the neck will create laxity and creepiness and loosen the skin.
A common misconception is that Botox in the neck will cause sagging skin. The platysma is a large neck muscle that helps move the neck and jaw. By relaxing this muscle with Botox, we can lift the jawline, define the neck, reduce neck wrinkles, and even lift the corners of the mouth.
