Hyperpigmentation, dark spots or patches on the skin, is often an area of concern in the summer when we spend more time in the sun and, therefore, produce more melanin. While not necessarily dangerous, hyperpigmentation can cause insecurity for those of us who seek a smooth, even complexion for our faces. So, how can we combat this?
Preventing Hyperpigmentation
When it comes to preventing hyperpigmentation, your first line of defense is sunscreen. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 50 or higher every day is crucial. This not only helps to prevent the development of hyperpigmentation but also protects your skin from harmful UV rays. Remember to reapply throughout the day, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.
Some of my favorites to apply in the morning are the Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen or the Revision Intellishade®, as both provide a soft tint to not only protect your skin but even out the skin tone! Opt for one of these in place of foundation,or put it under your makeup if you need extra coverage. Any of the sunscreens from EltaMD are great as well! They have both tinted and non-tinted options and are great if you want something for the full body.
For touchups during the day, try the skinbetter sunbetter® TONE SMART Sunscreen Compact. A powder compact, this formula adapts to your skin tone and is great for mattifying your skin! You can also try a Bluestone Sunshield if your skin is sensitive to sunscreen. This visor is great to put on post-treatment or for any outdoor activity.
Treating Hyperpigmentation
First, let’s discuss some tried-and-true heroes in the battle against hyperpigmentation: arbutin, hydroquinone, tretinoin, and azelaic acid. These ingredients have long been favored for their ability to fade dark spots and even out skin tone. Arbutin and hydroquinone work by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots, while tretinoin speeds up cell turnover to reveal fresh, new skin. Azelaic acid not only targets existing pigmentation but also helps prevent future spots from forming by reducing inflammation.
There are also some new front runners in the world of hyperpigmentation treatment. Oral and topical tranexamic acid, along with Sente’s Heparan Sulfate Cysteamine topical, are new cutting-edge treatments making waves for their abilities to tackle pigmentation like never before.
Tranexamic acid, whether taken orally or applied topically, inhibits the production of melanin and reduces inflammation that results in a brighter, more even complexion. Sente’s Heparan Sulfate Cysteamine topical takes a multi-faceted approach to pigmentation targeting both melanin production and oxidative stress while promoting skin renewal for lasting results.
With a little help from these ingredients along with proper SPF usage, you can say goodbye to hyperpigmentation and hello to a radiant and smooth complexion. So, this summer, don’t be afraid to embrace the sunshine knowing that your skin is armed and ready to face any dark spots that may pop up.
